Big changes coming for school conferences

 

School conferences are becoming a numbers game.

On the heels of an announcement that Bishop Garrigan intends to leave the North Central Conference (NCC) and join the North Iowa Conference (NIC), Eagle Grove and Clarion-Goldfield are also considering a change which could spell the end of the 88-year-old NCC.

“Everyone is just trying to figure out what is going on and what will make the most sense,” said Dale Ludwig, activities director for Clear Lake Schools.

Oldies but goodies win Alumni Tournament

 

The 1995-99 team defeated the two-year reigning champion team in the Clear Lake Alumni Basketball Tournament Saturday, Dec. 22 to claim bragging rights.  The team beat the 2005-06 team in the finals to claim the championship.  The 2005-06 team has won the tournament the last two years.  Nine teams and 70 

Boat ramp damaged

 

City crews worked to relieve pressure from the ice at the end of the Main Avenue boat ramp Thursday after ice caused a heave in the concrete ramp.  

Sunset reopens

 

The second half of the school year is beginning in the former Sunset Elementary School for students taking classes through the Lakeside Alternative (School) Program.  The program, serving Garner-Hayfield, Ventura and Clear Lake School District students, had been housed at the Ventura/G-H Middle School in Ventura.

Boy pulled safely from lake’s icy water by friend

 

An 11-year-old Clear Lake boy was pulled to safety Friday after he fell into the icy lake water.

According to Police Chief Greg Peterson, the boy and a 10-year-old friend approached the open water near the aerator operating in the vicinity of the Sea Wall. Fortunately his friend, who is also from Clear Lake, pulled his buddy out of the icy water.

CLMS students are going i-tech

 

It’s like Christmas all over again for Clear Lake Middle School students.  This week, all 285 of Clear Lake’s sixth, seventh and eighth graders will receive a new individual Apple iPad for their personal use during the school year.

Elaine F. Beard, 83, 1102 8th Ave. Court S., Clear Lake, Iowa, died Monday, Dec. 17, 2012 at the Oakwood Care Center, Clear Lake.  

A funeral service was held Friday, Dec. 21, 2012 at Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, Clear Lake, with Rev. Dennis Ganz officiating.   Memorials may be given to the V.F.W. Auxiliary in memory of Elaine Beard.

CL girls roll over Bishop Garrigan

 

Clear Lake’s defense shut down Garrigan in the second half and secured a 43-29 win for the Lions Tuesday night.  The victory put the Lions at 5-2 in the North Central Conference.

The Lions trailed 7-6 after one quarter and were down 17-16 at the half before turning their game 

around.  They outscored the host Bears 13-4 in the third quarter and held them to just eight in the final frame.

Forfeits doom Cardinals in home wrestling meet

 

The Garner-Hayfield/Ventura wrestling team hosted Belmond-Klemme and Northwood-Kensett on Tuesday, Dec. 18.

 

Due to a high number of forfeits, seven against N-K and six against B-K, the Cardinals had a hard time competing, dropping both matches.  G-H/V lost to Northwood, 60-18 and to Belmond-Klemme, 42-27.
