A solid win and an OT win for the Lions

 

The Clear Lake boys basketball team played two games last week, but won three!

The Lions have now been awarded a win in their Dec. 18 game at Bishop Garrigan because Garrigan used an ineligible player during the contest. Garrigan had won the game 79-67 and were 7-3 overall and 6-2 in the North Central Conference heading into the 

Cardinals rack up two more wins

 

It was a one-two punch for the Garner-Hayfield/Ventura boys basketball team as they picked up two wins following the holiday break.

A big first quarter helped the Cardinals garner a victory over Lake Mills at home on Friday, Jan. 4.

Girls come out on top of close battles

 

The Clear Lake girls pushed their record to 7-2 with a pair of wins coming off of the holiday break.  The Lions won close battles with Algona and Forest City.

Coach Bart Smith called the Lions’ win at Algona Friday the “biggest win of the season” for his team.

Balanced scoring leads to G-H/V win

 

A balanced scoring attack and a decrease in turnovers helped the Garner-Hayfield/Ventura girls basketball team pick up a win over Lake Mills on Friday, Jan. 4.

“It is very difficult to stop a team when they have balanced scoring from more than two girls,” said Coach

Humboldt, Webster City drop CL grapplers in close duals

 

The Clear Lake wrestling team traveled to Humboldt Thursday night, Jan. 3, to take on Humboldt and Webster City in North Central Conference wrestling. The Lions came out on the short end of the stick in both duals, losing 34-25 to Humboldt and 39-25 to Webster City. 

“Humboldt is 14-0 and ranked in state, so we did not do that bad, but we still expect to win,” said Coach Gary Weber. 

The  Lions trailed 28-25 heading into the last match, with a chance to win the dual, but were pinned leaving the final score 34-25. 

Wrestlers place third at Forest City

 

The Clear Lake wrestling team placed third in the eight-team Forest City Invite on Saturday.  The Lions nearly placed second, losing 153 to 152 to Algona. Charles City ran away with the team title. 

Mavis Hobbiebrunken

 

 

Mavis O. Hobbiebrunken, 84, Clear Lake, Iowa, formerly of the Thornton, Iowa, area, died Sunday, Dec. 30, 2012 at Oakwood Care Center, Clear Lake.

A funeral service for Mavis was held Thursday, Jan. 3, 2013 at the St. Paul Lutheran Church, Thornton, with The Rev. Rhea Evanson officiating.  Burial was in the Pleasant View Cemetery in Thornton.

Those wishing to give a memorial in her memory may wish to consider memorial contributions to the St. Paul Lutheran Church.

Lucile Snopek

 

Lucile L. (Bednar) Snopek, 96, of Ventura, Iowa, went to her eternal reward on Saturday, Dec. 29, 2012 at the Muse-Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City, Iowa, surrounded by her loved ones.  

A Funeral Mass was celebrated on Thursday, Jan. 3, 2013, at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, Clear Lake, with the Reverend Jon Gossman officiating.   Burial was in the Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery in Manly, Iowa.

Marcella Johnson

 

Marcella Johnson, 87, of 20 N. 4th St., Clear Lake, died Sunday, Jan. 6, 2013 at the Oakwood Care Center, Clear Lake, after a short illness.

     Funeral services will be at 11 a.m., Wednesday, Jan. 9, at the Clear Lake United Methodist Church, Clear Lake with the Rev. Dr. Rhoda Preston officiating.  Following the service she will be cremated and a
