“One aspect of having RAGBRAI visit a community is the opportunity for individuals, organizations, and businesses to generate income as a vendor.  While a perception is that everyone can ‘get rich’ when RAGBRAI comes to town, the fact is that will not happen, however those who want to get involved, do some extra work, have some fun, and make a nice profit will probably meet their expectations,” explains Diane Thompson, chair of the local committee planning for the RAGBRAI visit to Clear Lake July 23.

Lillian Cooper

Lillian Cooper, of Scottsdale, Ariz., passed away on March 25, 2014 at the age of 103.  She was born on Dec. 13, 1910 to Jurgen and Elizabeth Aden and grew up in Gothenburg, Neb.

She married Jim Cooper in 1932.  They lived in Omaha, Neb., and had two children, a son, Bob, and a daughter, Lu.  In 1947 the family moved to Marshalltown, Iowa.  Lillian was a member of PEO, a golfer and a bowler.  She also enjoyed a variety of crafts.  She loved life, laughter and country living.

Daryl Akers

Daryl Akers, of Clear Lake, formerly of Mason City, died Tuesday, March 25, 2014 at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City.

Memorial services were held on Saturday, March 29, 2014 at the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, Clear Lake, with Pastor Will Hunsaker officiating.  Family suggests memorials to Daryl Akers Memorial Fund.

Barbara Spalding

      Barbara R. (Knutson) Spalding, 73, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, died Sunday, March 9, 2014.  Memorial services will be held in June 2014 at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church.  Inurnment will be at the Oak Hill Cemetery in Lansing, Iowa. 

     Barbara was born April 23, 1940 in Waukon, Iowa, the daughter of Alex and Margaret (Kehr) Knutson.  She married Nyle A. Spalding on June 13, 1964 in Lansing.  Barbara was a teacher.  She 

Louis Schuler, Sr.

Louis E. Schuler, Sr., 92, of Clear Lake, died Saturday, March 22, 2014 at St. Mary’s Hospital, Rochester, Minn.  

Memorial services will be at 10 a.m., Saturday, April 5, 2014 at Galilean Lutheran Church, 4454 255th St., Hwy. 18 W., Clear Lake, with Rev. Scot McCluskey officiating with Military Honors conducted by the Clear Lake V.F.W.  Visitation with the family will be Friday, from 5 – 7 p.m. at the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. 4th St., Clear Lake, and one hour preceding the service
