Marjorie Lucille Lenning passed away on Dec. 13, 2007, at her home in Montgomery, Texas. A memorial service was held at Fellowship of the Woodlands Chapel on Saturday, Jan. 19. A brief graveside ceremony followed at Cashner Funeral Home in Conroe, Texas.
Marge was born in Pontiac, Mich. on Sept. 5, 1929, but spent 30 years around Clear Lake and 41 years in American Canyon, Calif. She resided with her daughter and son-in-law in Montgomery for the past three years.
Marge was the “wife of noble character” as described in Proverbs 31. Her husband, Art, had “full confidence” in her for 56 years, and she brought “him good, not harm, all the days of her life.” She “was clothed with strength and dignity…and watched over the affairs of her household.” Marge’s greatest joy was taking care of her husband and five children in a sacrificial way. She worked in food service at Redwood Jr. High in Napa, Calif. for 10 years; however, her greatest accomplishment was in being a loving mother and grandmother.
Marge was predeceased by her husband, Arthur (2005), and daughter, Julie (1985).
She is survived by her daughters, Diane Ives of Seattle, Wash. and Susan Winslow of Montgomery; and her sons, Bruce Lenning of Napa and Charles Lenning of Lahaina, Hawaii. Her grandchildren include Jamie Stefani, Jessie Ives, Shauna Ives, Gabe Winslow, Matt Winslow, Curt Brandt, Troy Lenning, Allison Lenning, Jake Lenning, and Ciera Lenning. Her great-grandchildren include Anna and Grace Stefani, Jasmine Sites, Aaron and Shane Winslow, and Avery Brandt.

Janette A. (Dickerson) Blanchard, 65, of Newton, Iowa, died Monday, Jan. 14, 2008, in Newton. A Mass of Christian Burial was held Friday, Jan. 18, at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Newton. Burial was at Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery in Mason City, Iowa. Memorials may be given to Sacred Heart Catholic Church or Hospice of Jasper County.
Janette was born Sept. 25, 1942 in Webster City, Iowa, the daughter of Lawrence and Lucille (Murphy) Dickerson. She grew up in the Clear Lake/Mason City area, graduating from Clear Lake High School in 1961. She married Paul G. Blanchard on Jan. 4, 1964 in Mason City.
Janette moved to Newton in 1965 and worked as a nurse’s aide for 18 years. After retiring from the hospital, she worked at the Hallmark store.
Janette was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church. She enjoyed knitting, planting and tending to her flowers, and reading. She and her husband grew vegetables and had a large garden. She also enjoyed traveling with her family. Survivors include her son, Paul A. (Kelly) Blanchard of Newton; two daughters, Anna (Larry) Pietz of Newton, and Sharon (Brian) Mumm of Bloomington, Wis.; four grandchildren, Margaret Ann and James Michael Pietz, and Nicholas Brian and Logan Thomas Mumm; a brother, Gary (Susan) Dickerson of Eldora, Iowa; sister, Connie (Don) Roberts of Waverly, Iowa; her special friend, Marlys Strike; and many nieces and nephews.
Janette was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Paul in 2003; brother, Larry Dickerson; sister, Kaye Trampel; and nephews, Darren Dickerson and Blake Blanchard.

Grace Pauline Jones, 85, 309 Willow St., Thornton, Iowa, died Wednesday, Jan. 16, 2008 at her home. A funeral Mass was held Monday, Jan. 21, at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, Clear Lake with Rev. John R. Tilp officiating. Interment will be at the Clear Lake Cemetery. Memorials may be given to Hospice of North Iowa.
Grace was born Oct. 23, 1922 in New Richland, Minn., the daughter of Peter and Justine (Weber) Weydert. She graduated from Presentation Academy, Whittemore, Iowa in 1939. She worked in Ft. Dodge as a cashier for the movie theater. Grace married Joseph F. Jones on Aug. 24, 1943 at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Clear Lake. They farmed in the Emmetsburg, Iowa area before moving to Clear Lake in 1944. They lived several places, including Arizona, Mason City, Rockwell and Fertile, Iowa before moving back to Clear Lake in 1962. In 1979 they moved to Thornton.
Grace enjoyed spending winters in Apache Junction, Az. She worked at the Mirror Reporter and the Globe Gazette in advertising. She was very involved in church. Grace sang with the Keynotes, loved to play bingo and dance. She enjoyed arts and crafts, growing flowers and walking. She was very active in the democratic party. She taught CCD, sang in the choir and was a lector for church. She was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church and was active in the ACCD – women’s Catholic group.

Carl R. (Dick) Lundgren, 86, Clear Lake, died Monday, Jan. 21, 2008 at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City, Iowa.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, Jan. 25, at Zion Lutheran Church, 112 North 4th Street, Clear Lake with the Rev. Derik Yarian officiating. Interment will take place at the Clear Lake Cemetery with military honors by the Clear Lake V.F.W. Memorial are suggested to Hospice of North Iowa or Mercy Cancer Center.
Carl (Dick) was born on June 28, 1921, the first born son of Carl G. and Olga E. (Fjone) Lundgren at Firesteel, S.D. Carl (Dick) was six years old when his father died; he then lived part-time with his uncle and aunt, Knute and Hazel Fjone in South Dakota. He was baptized and confirmed at Grace Lutheran Church in Firesteel, S.D.
He graduated from Timberlake, S.D. high school in 1938. He moved to Iowa to join his Uncle Knute Fjone in farming. He worked as a hired hand on various farms in the North Iowa area. He served in the U.S. Army from 1941-1944. He served with the military police and then as a medic (surgical technician). He was stationed in Japan at the time of atomic bomb attack. After discharge, he returned to Iowa and engaged in farming.
He married Dorothy M. Jass on July 2, 1948. Two sons were born to them, Kenneth Carl and Bill Richard. They farmed several years in the North Iowa area. He was employed at Ventura Farm Service and was employed as delivery person for Krieger’s Floral (his favorite occupation). Upon retirement he then did child care for his grandson Kyle. He enjoyed going to coffee with the guys and playing cards (his favorite pastime) with family and friends.
He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church. He was a lifetime member of the V.F.W.

Harold P. Wolfe, 65, 2400 South Shore Dr., Clear Lake, died Sunday, Jan. 20, 2008 at his home. Funeral arrangements are pending at Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, Clear Lake.

DNR awards lake dredging contract
The Iowa Department of Natural Resources Commission has awarded a contract to L.W. Matteson, of Burlington, Iowa for dredging work at the west end of Clear Lake. Matteson’s bid of $6,453,000 was the lowest of three bids submitted for the work. Matteson also did the dredging project at Crystal Lake.
The engineer’s estimate for the work, which will begin this spring, was $8 million.
The project consists of the hydraulic dredging of Little Lake portion of Clear Lake, control structures in the spoil containment site located south of Ventura, and incidental work. The project is budgeted by Lake Water Quality Improvement Funds over the course of two fiscal years at $4.7 million each year and an additional $1 million from the local community.
Son accused of killing mother turns himself in to CL police
The Mason City man accused of killing his mother with a hatchet turned himself in to Clear Lake authorities just after 3 a.m. Sunday, Jan. 20.
Jordan Scott Johnson, 23, walked into the Clear Lake Police Department at approximately 3:05 a.m. and told the dispatcher that he needed to be arrested, because he had done something very bad.
Officers responded to the police department and placed Johnson under arrest.
Early Sunday morning, approximately 12:50 a.m., the Mason City Police Department put out a notice to area law enforcement that officers should be on the lookout for Johnson, of Mason City. According to Clear Lake Police Chief Greg Peterson, Johnson was wanted for questioning in the homicide of his mother, Rita Seely. It was believed the homicide had occurred up to two hours prior to the notification. Johnson was thought to be driving a 1998 Oldsmobile Aurora. Officers were cautioned that Johnson might be armed and dangerous.
The Mason City Police Department was notified that Johnson was in custody in Clear Lake and at approximately 3:31 a.m. Mason City police officers arrived in Clear Lake and questioned Johnson.
The vehicle Johnson was driving was towed to be held for evidence.
At 7:20 a.m., Mason City officers left the CLPD with Johnson in custody.

NI Cultural Center & Museum hires executive director
Lietz selected to serve in a new
capacity at the Surf Ballroom
The North Iowa Cultural Center & Museum Board of Directors announced Tuesday, Jan. 22, that Laurie Lietz has been hired to serve as the newly formed non-profit organization’s executive director.
Along with the Board of Directors, Lietz will be responsible for overseeing the Surf Ballroom’s operations and finances, the development and implementation of a facility maintenance plan, facility tours and volunteer scheduling for the Surf Ballroom, as well as developing and managing all aspects of the concert venue’s marketing program.
“We were very excited to be able to choose such a quality applicant for this position. Laurie has all the qualities we were looking for in an Executive Director. Her leadership will be very important to the future of the Surf,” commented Jeff Nicholas, board member of the North Iowa Cultural Center and Museum.
Having served as the Clear Lake Area Chamber of Commerce’s Director of Tourism for nearly 10 years, she brings to the Surf Ballroom a background in marketing, public relations, volunteer recruitment and experience in working with event coordination and planning. Prior to her tenure at the Chamber, she managed the Heartland Inn in Clear Lake. She and her husband, Mike, reside in the Forest City area.
“I am both excited and honored to be chosen to serve in this capacity. It is time for the Surf Ballroom to be an integral part of the community and for the community to be an integral part of the Surf”, explained Lietz. “I think that the Surf Ballroom’s future looks very, very bright. This Rock ‘n Roll treasure is at a pivotal point in its history with many new opportunities as a non-profit organization.”
Lietz will begin her duties on Feb. 18.
