A win is a win as Lions top the Comets

As they say, a win is a win.  And Clear Lake Coach Fred Wieck says he’ll take the 14-6 season opener victory his team recorded Friday night in Charles City.
The number four ranked Lions (3A) committed a number of miscues early on, but benefitted from a staunch defense and a few big plays to post the non-district win.  The victory runs the Lions’ regular season win streak to 24.
The Lions got off to a slow start against the Comets. They fumbled on their first two possessions.
“Basically the first quarter we didn’t have the ball. We had four turnovers and just didn’t play very well in the first half,” said the coach.
The Lion defense continued to hold off Comet scoring threats in the second quarter.  After the home team stole the ball at midfield and mounted a drive which stalled at the 16, a 32-yard field goal attempt was no good.  The Lions took over on the 20, but were forced to punt on fourth down.  The Comets also went four and out, giving the Lions back the ball at the 6:40 mark in the second quarter.
Starting deep in their own territory, quarterback Ozzie Adams completed an 86 yard pass play to Paxton Farmer.  Farmer slipped a tackle at the 10 and put the Lions on the scoreboard, 6-0.  Farmer followed up his run by splitting the uprights with an extra point.  The Lions were up 7-0 with 6:25 left in the first half.  Farmer finished the game with three receptions for 105 yards.  He carried the ball nine times for eight yards.
Adams completed five of 10 pass attempts for 133 yards.   Adams was also the leading ground gainer for the Lions. He carried the ball 15 times for 51 yards.
The Lions threatened to go up by another touchdown just before the first half ended.   After its defense stopped the Comets, Josh Brood returned the punt to the 36 and the offense began to move the ball.  Elliott Neuberger carried the ball inside the 10 for another first down with 26-second to go in the half.  With 12-seconds remaining the Comets intercepted an Adams pass into the endzone to end the drive.
The Lion QB threw his second interception of the game in the first series of the second half.  The Comets took advantage of the mistake and drove the ball into Lion territory.  Four completed pass plays, along with a Lion face mask penalty, gave the Comets first and goal at the three yard line.  Griffin Feller took the ball in for a score with 5:29 remaining in the third, however the extra point kick hit the upright and was no good, making the score 7-6 Lions.
Clear Lake tacked on its second TD with :10 seconds remaining in the third.  On second down and 11 at the 21, Adams completed a pass to Farmer at the 12.  Jordan Kruger then hauled the ball to the seven and three plays later he scored on a straight ahead run from the one.  Farmer’s kick was good, 14-6.
The Lion defense controlled the Comets in the final period and Clear Lake’s offense had one final chance to score late in the game.  The Lions fielded a punt at midfield and drove inside the 13.  The Lions opted to take a knee in the final minute and let the clock run out for the victory.
“Charles City was tough and played us tough,” commented Coach Wieck.
The Lions finished the game with 270 yards of offense, to 202 for the Comets.  In addition to Adams’ 51 yards, Neuberger had 37 yards on seven carries.  Brent Tarr rushed seven times for 13 yards.  Michael Keeran ran the ball four times for 20 yards and Jordan Kruger carried three times for six yards.  Tarr had one reception for 17 and Nick Kruger caught two passes for 11 yards.
The Lion defense was led by Neuberger and Austin Horner with seven and six solo tackles respectively.  Tanner Tusha had five.  Austin Horner was also credited with seven assisted tackles.  Brood, Keeran, Chase Duesenberg, Tanner Truesdell and Brady Horner all had three solo and four assisted tackles apiece.  Zac Bendickson had one interception to go with his one solo and four assisted tackles.
The Lions will be looking to keep extending their regular season win streak when they host Forest City this Friday at Lions Field.  Game time is 7:30 p.m.

First game jitters plague the Vikings

First game jitters and mental mistakes cost the Ventura Vikings their home opener on Friday, Aug. 27.  The Vikings hosted West Bend-Mallard in Eight Man District 2 competition.
“I think there were some first game jitters that we had to work out during this game,” said Head Coach Mark Pueggel.
The first quarter saw even play, with both teams finishing scoreless.  The Wolverines opened it up in the second quarter, scoring two touchdowns and two, two-point conversions.  Ventura’s defense stepped it up and held off another WB-M threat at the end of the second quarter for a 16-0 half time score.
The Wolverines capitalized on a Viking fumble at the end of the fourth quarter for a 24-0 victory.
“We fumbled the ball way too many times, and had some big plays on offense that got called back on penalties,” said Pueggel.
Pueggel credited West Bend-Mallard for being a good team and said he knew that the team’s first four games of the season would test them.
Cal Huber led the team in rushing with 67 yards on 19 carries.  Trevor Jackson picked up 21 yards on eight carries and Zach Tannahill had five carries for 11 yards.
Ventura quarterback Ryan Schmitz was three for six passing for 50 yards.  His receiver of choice was Joel Watson, who had three catches for 50 yards.
Hard-hitting Hunter Olinger led the team in tackles with 19.
“Hunter played an outstanding game on defense,” said Pueggel.  “His hard work in the off-season is starting to pay off.”
Other tackle leaders included Huber with 15, Watson with 13 and Cole Hanley had 11.  Also collecting tackles was Tannahill, six; Damien Beard, five; Jared Callison, four; Jackson, three; Cody Kramer, two and Jacob Austin, one.
“We are going to learn some things from this loss and we will continue to get better,” said Pueggel.

Six players earn post season honors

Clear Lake’s Ozzie Adams has earned First Team All-North Central Conference and All-District baseball honors.  Adams, a sophomore utility player, batted .4221 and had a pitching record of 4-5 this season.
Elliott Neuberger was a Second Team All-NCC choice, as well as a Second Team pick for the Central District as a pitcher.  He compiled a record of 7-2 this season.
Joining Neuberger on the NCC Second Team was senior infielder Alex Uhlenhopp, sophomore outfielder Tanner Truesdell and sophomore utility player Michael Keeran.  Austin Kessler, a junior, was named to the All-NCC Third Team.
“I was a little disappointed a few more of our kids didn’t get recognized on both the All-Conference and All-District Teams after finishing 22-10 overall and 14-4 in Conference, but unfortunately it becomes a numbers game sometimes in baseball and our individual stats weren’t overly-impressive,” said Clear Lake Coach Seth Thompson.  “I think it says a lot about this group of kids-- that without great individual stats as a team they finished in second place in the conference ahead of some pretty good teams (two of which played in the State tournament) and 22-10 overall.”
The Lions finished second in the conference with a 14-4 record, behind Hampton-Dumont (17-1) and ahead of St. Edmonds (13-5).

Three softball players tabbed for conference honors

Faber a unanimous First Team selection

Clear Lake’s Rea Faber was a unanimous First Team All-North Central Conference selection, it was announced last week.
Faber, an outfielder for the Lions, was one of three unanimous choices for the honor.  She was joined by Algona’s Chelsea Korf, also an outfielder, and Algona utility player Mackenzie Siefken.  Faber, a junior, batted .413 in 109 at-bats and led the team in stolen bases with 23. She also led the team in runs scored, with 26.
Clear Lake senior Macey Hansen was named to the Second Team as an infielder.  Hansen played first base for the Lions.  She compiled a batting average of .379 this season with a team-high 22 RBIs.
Senior Kathryn Nieman was a Third Team All-NCC selection.  The infielder batted .281 with a team-high four doubles.  She was second on the team in RBIs with 16, as well as runs scored, with 19.
The Lions finished the season with a record of 14-16.

Lions end great season with a heartbreaker

The Clear Lake baseball season came to a sudden and unexpected end Friday, July 16.  Humboldt roared back from a 5-0 deficit late in their first round District game and finished with a 6-5 victory in eight innings.
“Every team, except for four teams in the state all year, have to end with a loss.  But games like this to end the year leave an especially deep bruise inside that will take a while to heal, I am sure for both our players and fans,” said Lions Coach Seth Thompson.
The Lions, who defeated Humboldt both times they played during the regular season, had a five-run lead heading into the sixth inning.  The Wildcats began to spark a comeback in the sixth to pull within 5-2.
Then in the seventh, with two outs, Humboldt’s Al Cordero hit a homerun to tie the game.  It was only the third homerun of the year for the entire Wildcat team.
After the Lions came up empty in the top of the eighth inning, the Wildcats used a bloop sacrifice hit to get the winning run home with two outs.
The young Lions team was led in the game by its only senior, Alex Uhlenhopp.  He had three hits in the contest, including a double, and an RBI.
“He was a huge part of our team this year on and off the field and we are appreciative to everything he has meant for our program,” said Coach Thompson about Uhlenhopp’s contributions to the team.
Jake Kockler was the only other Lion with multiple hits.  His singles scored a run.  Tanner Truesdell and Austin Kessler accounted for the remainder of the Lions’ seven hits in the game. Truesdell got on base with a double.
Elliott Neuberger pitched five and two-thirds innings for the Lions, giving up two hits and striking out three.  Ozzie Adams was on the mound for two frames.  He was touched for four hits and struck out two.
“I told our kids after the game that hopefully after the wound this game made has some time to heal they can look back at their season and see that although it didn’t end like any of us wanted they were able to accomplish some pretty remarkable things throughout the year,” said Coach Thompson.  “And the nice thing about being such a young team is that almost all of them get a chance next year to come out and do what we need to do to finish the season off on a better note. Overall though, to end with a 22-10 record and finish second in what turned out to be a very good North Central Conference baseball conference is a big step in the right direction for these kids and our program.”

Lions top W-CL-T; fall to New Hampton

The Lions baseball team split a pair of games against non-conference opponents in the final week of the regular season.

CL 15, W-CL-T 0
It took just four innings for the Lions to dismantle Woden-Crystal Lake-Titonka Monday, July 12.
Clear Lake pounded out 12 hits in the game, led by Ozzie Adams’ three.  Michael Keeran and Tanner Tusha each had two.  Adams had two doubles, while Keeran had one.
Gavin Sheakley also had a double.  Alex Uhlenhopp, Elliott Neuberger, Jake Kockler, Antonio DiMarco all reached base on singles.
Neuberger and Colin Lobdell shared the pitching duties, with Neuberger getting the win.  Each allowed one hit.  Neuberger struck out two.
“I thought we were very sharp offensively, collecting 12 hits as a team in only three innings of batting (15-run rule in effect after four innings),” said Coach Seth Thompson.  “We had a good approach at the plate and found some good pitches to hit and put some good swings on the ball.”

New Hampton 7, CL 5
Mental mistakes on offense and defense cost the Lions a win Tuesday, July 13, at New Hampton.
“New Hampton is a very good offensive club, but we bailed out their defense a few times with some mental mistakes and poor at-bats,” said Coach Thompson.
The coach was pleased that his team didn’t go down easy.  The Lions scored four runs in the final inning and brought the go-ahead run to the plate after being down 7-1.
“I liked to see us go down clawing, but we came up a hit or two short,” said Thompson.
The Lions had just six hits in the game, with Alex Uhlenhopp and Jake Kockler swinging for doubles and Ozzie Adams, Zack Bendickson, Elliott Neuberger and Austin Kessler striking singles.

Waverly-SR tops Clear Lake in Class 3A Regional softball semi-final

Waverly-Shell Rock broke open a 4-0 game in the sixth inning and went on to capture a Class 3A Regional semi-final win Monday, July 12, at Waverly.
The Go-Hawks added six runs in the sixth inning to shut out the Lions, who had just four hits in the game.  The top of the Lions’ order, Rea Faber, Brittany Mumm and Macey Hansen, each had singles.  Emma Schiller got the other hit for the Lions.
“The Waverly game was a tough game. We knew going in it was a tall order; they are a good team with good offensive power,” said Lions Coach Nicki Petersburg.
Pitcher Taylor Diehl had a good outing for the Lions.  She struck out four and the Go-Hawks had seven hits in five and one-third innings.  The Lions committed three errors, which contributed to three unearned runs.    “
“Taylor Diehl did an excellent job of keeping their bats silent for several innings,” noted Coach Petersburg.  “Had we brought our bats, the game would’ve been entirely different. Unfortunately we had a rough sixth inning and our season ended.”
Petersburg noted that the Lions had an improved season and can look to next year with optimism.
“We won more than last year, continued to gain experience, and fought very well at times,” she said.  “My goal for next year is to bring the fight every game, not just occasionally or in close games.”
Clear Lake finished the season with a record of 14-16.

Clear Lake girls rally to top Forest City

The Clear Lake softball team mounted one of its most memorable comebacks in recent history and advanced to the Regional semi-final with a 10-9 victory over Forest City Saturday night.
The Lions were down 9-2 in the fourth inning of the Regional quarterfinal, but four runs in the fifth and sixth innings lifted them to the one-run win.
“I can’t say enough about how proud of our girls I am!” said Coach Nicki Petersburg.   “Overcoming a seven-run deficit to win by one was outstanding.  We played with a lot of fight and a lot of believe and no one quit.”
The Lions collected 16 hits in the post-season win.  Rea Faber, Macey Hansen and Emma Schiller had three hits apiece.  Brittany Mumm, Ashley Willms and Jordan Crosser had two hits apiece.
Pitcher Taylor Diehl settled down after a shaky start and got the win.  She surrendered five hits and struck out two.  The Lions defense was also shaky early on and committed six errors in the game.
The Indians also had their share of defensive struggles.  Forest City committed five errors during Clear Lake’s rally.
“I told the girls that we knew that Forest City was going to hit and that we had to bring our bats and hit too,” said Coach Petersburg.  “ We played with a lot of fight and a lot of believe and no one quit.  This win erases all the bad losses we’ve had this year.  I’m very proud!”
The victory over Forest City sent Clear Lake to Waverly Monday night to play the host team.  W-SR defeated Charles City 7-6 in the Regional quarterfinal.

CL 6, IF-A 1
The Lions started the last week of the regular season by playing Iowa Falls-Alden at home on Tuesday, July 6.  Clear Lake was a 6-1 winner.
Coach Petersburg called the victory a good team effort and win. “Just about everyone had a hit, several different girls scored runs, and we only committed one error.  I was very happy with the way we fought back after a devastating loss to Mason City the Friday before.”
Macey Hansen paced the Lion offense with three hits, two of them doubles.  She finished with six RBIs.  Rea Faber and Brittany Mumm each had two hits, with one of Faber’s being a double.  Kathryn Nieman also had a double.

CL 17, C-G 5
The Lions did all the little things offensively and got a big win Wednesday, July 7.  They topped Clarion-Goldfield 17-5.
Fifteen hits, including triples off the bats of Rea Faber and Kathryn Nieman, powered the Lions.  Nieman had five hits in the contest, while Faber finished with three. Brittany Mumm and Rachel Kopriva each had two.
Taylor Diehl pitched the win.  She gave up eight hits and struck out two.
Coach Petersburg said the Lions would have to concentrate on eliminating errors.  Five errors blemished the win.

Humboldt 9, CL 1; Humboldt 16, CL 3 (6)
The Lions finished the regular season with a double-header at home against Humboldt on Thursday.  The Wildcats handled the Lions, 9-1 and 16-3.
“Both games were terrible losses for us.  We didn’t show up to play, had 11 errors and 12 hits on the night; not a winning formula,” said Coach Petersburg.
In the first game, five errors again pulled the team down.  The team was also held to six hits, with no player getting more than one.  The top of the order supplied the offense.  Rea Faber, Brittany Mumm, Kathryn Nieman, Emma Schiller, Ashley Willms and Rachel Kopriva had singles.
In the second game, Humboldt continued to pour on the offense.  They pounded 15 hits off of pitcher Sarah Barlow in five innings.  Meanwhile, the Lions managed just five hits.  Rea Faber had three of those.  Kathryn Nieman and Emma Schiller had the other hits.
“We finished the regular season on a sour note, but with a better record than we’ve had in a couple years,” pointed out Petersburg.  The Lions were 13-15 overall; 9-9 in the conference, tied for fourth with three other teams.

Clear Lake boys top 20 win mark

The Clear Lake baseball team continued to impress last week by going 6-0, including a win over a ranked opponent.  The Lions finished the North Central Conference season 14-4 in second place and are currently 21-8 overall.  This Clear Lake team is the first since 2004 to earn 20 wins.  They are slated to play three regular season games this week before starting district play in Algona Friday against Humboldt.

CL 9, IF-A 3; CL 6, IF-A 3
The Lions bounced back from a loss with an error-free game and 9-3 win over Iowa Falls-Alden Tuesday, July 6.  The double header was capped with a 6-3 Lions win.
Michael Keeran and Zac Bendickson each had three hits in the game.  One of Bendickson’s was a home run.
Coach Seth Thompson said the game was testimony to the balance which is developing in the Lion line-up.
Ozzie Adams had two hits in the game for two RBIs.  Tanner Truesdell and Alex Uhlenhopp had one apiece.
Elliott Neuberger for the win, pitching five innings and giving up six hits.  He struck out three.  Uhlenhopp pitched the final two innings.
In the nightcap, seven Lions collected 11 hits in the win.  Adams had three of the hits, good for two RBI.  Bendickson stayed hot with a pair of hits.  Uhlenhopp stroked a double, while Neuberger and Jake Kockler had singles for RBIs. Austin Kessler and Michael Keeran also had hits.
Gavin Sheakley threw for the Lions.  He struck out seven and gave up seven hits to the Cadets.

CL 6, C-G 4
Wednesday the Lions were at Clarion for an NCC game.  Clear Lake scored six runs in the second, then held on for a 6-4 victory.
“We were able to make some defensive plays and pitches to get us out of some key jams and that is always a good thing to see, especially on the road,” said Coach Seth Thompson.
Balance was again evident in the line-up, as six batters figured in the eight hits.  Michael Keeran and Tanner Truesdell had two hits apiece.  One of Truesdell’s was a double.
Collin Lobdell pitched the win.  Over six innings he gave up seven hits and struck out three.

CL 6, Central Springs 3
Class 2A’s number nine rated Central Springs provided the Lions with a good tune-up to post season play.  The Lions earned a 6-3 victory on their home field Thursday.
“It is fun to see our kids step out on the field feeling, despite the ranking and conference championship, their opponents had the feeling they were the better team and getting the win,” said Coach Thompson.
The Lions’s defense played well behind a good pitching effort by Ozzie Adams.  Adams led the offensive attack as well, with three hits including a double and three RBIs. Jack Kockler, Tanner Truesdell, Elliott Neuberger, Austin Kessler and Tanner Tusha scattered the remainder of the team’s eight hits.

CL 4, Humboldt 1; CL 9, Humboldt 6
The busy week took a toll, but the Lions came away with a pair of wins over Humboldt Friday.
“I thought we looked like a team that had just played six games in four days,” said Coach Thompson.  “Our defense made some mental and physical mistakes and our offense took a while to get going, but fortunately was able to string together two four-run innings.”
In the first game, Jake Kockler was on the mound for six innings and kept the Lions in the lead.  He gave up four hits and struck out six.  Elliott Neuberger was brought in to relieve in the final inning and he earned a save.
Coach Thompson thought his offense was a bit sluggish, but got the job done with six hits.
In the second game, Ryan Iverson pitched himself nicely out of some tough spots early, keeping the Lions in the game.  Elliott Neuberger came in for the last inning to get his second save of the night.
“It was great to see Alex Uhlenhopp, our only senior, on senior night come through with the hit to give us the lead in the sixth inning.”  Uhlenhopp finished with a pair of hits and RBIs.  He also scored twice.
Michael Keeran also had two hits.  Tanner Truesdell, Neuberger, Austin Kessler and Iverson each had one hit.

“I’m always looking to get the best local talent to compete in the tough Region XI conference and I feel this group of players is going to battle for that championship,” said Chris Frenz, NIACC golf coach.
“Brinkman, Rollefson, and Webb were members of a solid golf program at Clear Lake and all helped their team achieve great results,” said Frenz.  “I look forward to their leadership both on and off the course.”

UPSET: Lions stun Mason City

It was a huge week for the Clear Lake baseball team.  The Lions dropped an important North Central Conference game to Hampton-Dumont, but bounced back with a stunning, bottom-of-the-seventh inning victory over Mason City.  The week ended with a split against Algona and Webster City.
The Lions are 15-8 and 9-4 (second place) in the conference heading into the final full week of the season.  The Lions are at Clarion tonight (Wednesday), then host Central Springs in a non-conference tilt Thursday.  Friday Humboldt will be in town and Monday, June 12, play Woden-Crystal Lake/Titonka in JV-varsity games.  Tuesday, July 13, the Lions travel to New Hampton.

H-D 3, CL 2
Hampton-Dumont and Clear Lake played like the cream of the North Central Conference crop on Monday, June 28.  The league-leading Bulldogs, ranked number eight in class 3A, held on for a 3-2 win over the Lions.
“I thought that this was a very well-played and well-pitched game,” said Clear Lake Coach Seth Thompson.  “We were able to claw back into the game against one of the best pitchers in the area, but unfortunately just came up a couple hits short.”
With the win, the Bulldogs (11-1) control their own destiny to capture the conference crown.  The loss put the Lions in second place alone at 8-3.
Ozzie Adams had some trouble early, but settled down on the mound.  He gave up seven hits and struck out four in six innings pitched.  The Lions committed four errors in the game.
“I thought Ozzie did a wonderful job after allowing a couple early runs of finding a groove and keeping an excellent offensive team at bay for the rest of the game,” said Coach Thompson.
The Lions scored their two runs off three hits.  Adams and Zach Bendickson each had doubles which scored runs.  Jake Kockler also reached base on a single.

CL 5, MC 4
For the first time since 2003, the Lions knocked off Mason City.  And they did it in impressive fashion against the number two ranked team in Class 4A.
“We found out a lot about this young team tonight, coming out and competing their hearts out after an emotionally-draining and disappointing loss playing for their conference lead the night before,” said Coach Thompson.  “I think this game shows these kids just how good they can be when all 9-plus guys find a way to contribute to help their team win.  Most teams in their position would be happy just competing against the number two team in 4A, but these kids honestly felt they could beat them and were able to mount a four-run rally in the bottom of the seventh inning to turn those hopes into reality.”
The seventh inning rally began when Austin Kessler reached on a walk to start the inning.  Zach Bendickson tagged his second double of the game and two more Lions reached on errors before the Mohawks finally recorded an out.  Coach  Thompson called the first of two squeeze plays with number nine  hitter Tanner Tusha at the plate.  Tusha’s bunt was perfect and the Lions tied the game at 4-4.
Elliott Neuberger fueled the excitement when he laid down another perfect bunt to score Alex Uhlenhopp for the win.
Bendickson and Uhlenhopp were the offensive leaders in the game for the Lions, finishing with two hits apiece. Uhlenhopp had two RBI.  Neuberger, Michael Keeran and Tusha had the remainder of the Lions’ seven hits in the game.
The other amazing part of the game was the performance of freshman pitcher Gavin Sheakley.  Making just his third start of the season, Sheakley was calm under pressure.  He gave up seven hits in the win.
“I can’t say enough about what an individual accomplishment it was for Gavin Sheakley to do what he did on the mound against an offense like that as a freshman in his 3rd varsity start,” said Thompson.  “To not just find a way to record 21 outs, but also be able to keep his team in the game against an offense like that is truly remarkable.”
Thompson hopes the non-conference win will supply the team with the confidence and experience it will need heading into District play in another week.
“Hopefully it gives these kids a little taste of how exciting and rewarding it can be to get big wins against really good teams. I hope for their sake they have even more exciting wins to come yet this season.”

CL 5, Algona 3
The Lions picked up a tough win on the road Wednesday against Algona.  Elliott Neuberger was sharp on the mound, turning away nine Bulldogs with strikeouts and allowing just six hits.
“Any win on the road in conference against a good team is a good win. You never know what to expect after back to back nights like we had Monday and Tuesday, but these kids came out and got the job done against a good Algona team,” said the coach.   “This field in Algona will be the site of districts for us, so to get a win on that field against a team that could be our district final opponent will hopefully help us bring some positive energy into districts in a few weeks.”
Jake Kockler and Ozzie Adams had two hits apiece for the Lions.  Zach Bendickson, Michael Keeran, Alex Uhlenhopp and Tanner Tusha each had one.  Tusha picked up a pair of RBIs.

WC 9, CL 7
“This game was decided by which team played better defensively, and unfortunately that wasn’t us tonight,” said a disappointed Coach Thompson after Friday’s game against Webster City.  Despite pounding out 10 hits, the Lions went down, 9-7.
“We beat these guys 7-2 at their place while giving up eight hits and two walks, and tonight gave up fewer hits (6) and the same number of walks and gave up 7 more runs than the game before,” noted Thompson.   “Some nights you are sharper defensively than others, but as a team we mentally need to be tougher than we showed tonight. Losses can be turned from negatives to positives if they can show us as a team and as individuals what we need to work on and hopefully we can learn that from tonight.”
Ozzie Adams and Colin Lobdell each had a pair of hits, with Lobdell picking up three RBIs.  Michael Keeran continued to swing a hit bat.  He had a hit and three walks to score two runs.  Elliott Neuberger, Jake Kockler, Zach Bendickson, Austin Kessler and Tanner Tusha all had hits.
Adams took the loss on the mound.  He struck out 11, but gave up six hits.  The Lions were charged with eight costly errors.

A week of ups and downs for the Clear Lake girls

It was a bit of an up and down week for the Clear Lake girls softball team last week.  The Lions played in Hampton Monday and won, 12-3. Tuesday the team traveled to Iowa Falls and lost, 2-1.  Wednesday and Thursday the Lions picked up wins against Algona and Webster City, but Friday, a highly regarded Mason City team handled the Lions, 13-1.
This week the Lions are at Clarion-Goldfield tonight (Wednesday), then host Humboldt Thursday.  The team begins Regional play Saturday by hosting Forest City at 7 p.m.

CL 13, H-D 3
The Lions recorded a well-deserved win against Hampton-Dumont Monday.
“We worked hard throughout and got the job done in style,” said Coach Nikki Petersburg.
The Lions knocked out 15 hits in the contest, led by Emma Schiller’s three.  One of those was a double.  Rea Faber, Brittany Mumm, Kathryn Nieman, Macey Hansen and Jordan Crosser each had two hits.  Mumm was the leader in RBIs with four.
Taylor Diehl picked up the win on the mound.  The Bulldogs touched her for seven hits.  She struck out one.

IF-A 2, CL 1
In contrast to Monday’s game, the Lions were in a defensive battle with Iowa Falls-Alden on Tuesday.
The Cadets used a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the sixth inning to earn the win.
“This loss was tough, mostly because it was such a good game by both teams from the beginning to the end,” said Coach Petersburg.
Clear Lake’s lone run was provided by freshman Olivia Myers, who sent a solo shot over the center field fence.  “She had a good week!” noted the coach.
Brittany Mumm, Kathryn Nieman and Macey Hansen had the remainder of the Lions’ four hits in the game.
Taylor Diehl gave up eight hits while taking the loss on the mound.  She struck out two.

CL 10, Algona 5
Taylor Diehl and the Lion defense held off a potent Algona offense in Wednesday night’s game.  The Lions used nine hits to score 10 runs and get the win.
Lead-off batter Rea Faber did her part, getting on base three times and picking up three RBIs in the game.  Brittany Mumm and Kathryn Nieman followed with one hit and RBI apiece.  Number five batter Macey Hansen used one hit to bring in two runs for the Lions.  Jordan Crosser and Emma Schiller also had hits and Taylor Diehl helped her cause with a single.
Diehl pitched the win, striking out two.  The Bulldogs had seven hits in the game.

CL 4, WC 1
It was payback time when the Lions hosted Webster City Thursday night.
“They beat us bad the week (11-1) before and their hometown newspaper smeared our names, got facts wrong, and printed a very unsportsman-like article,” reported Coach Petersburg.  “That was our motivation and the win felt good all the way around!”
Petersburg called her team’s effort their  “best game of the year” and noted Diehl had her best outing on the mound to date.  The Lions won, 4-1.
The Lynx managed just four hits off Diehl in the game and she struck out three.  The Lions played errorless ball.
Clear Lake’s four runs were scored on three hits.  Rea Faber continued to use her speed and bunted and ran her way on base once in the game.  Macey Hansen and Jordan Crosser had the other hits.
While the Lynx pitcher Kaitlyn Biere struck out 10 in the game, she walked two and her defense let her down.  Webster City’s four errors helped the Lions get on top.  Clear Lake committed no errors.

MC 13, CL 1
Mason City proved it is deserving of the attention it is receiving this year as a touch contender in Class 4A.  The Mohawks cruised to a 13-1 victory in five innings Friday to close out the week.
“Mason City is a tough team.  They probably don’t get all the credit they deserve because they play in such a tough conference,” said Coach Petersburg.  “We found out the hard way how good their pitching and hitting is.  We didn’t show up to play and the score reflects that.”
Rea Faber got the Lions’ only hit off pitcher Lexy Pederson She also had a stolen base to get her in position to score a run.
Taylor Diehl pitched the majority of the game for the Lions.  The Mohawks picked up 12 hits and had seven earned runs off her.  She struck out two.  Sarah Barlow came in an struck out one.
The Lions were hampered by seven errors.

Impressive Lions rally some wins

The Clear Lake Lions continue to impress.  After starting the season 2-4, the team improved to 13-6 overall with five more wins last week.

CL 12, St. Ed’s 9
St. Ed’s 5, CL 4 (8)
Class 2A’s defending state champs, the Gaels of Fort Dodge St. Ed’s, hosted a doubleheader with the Lions Monday, June 21.  The Lions earned a hard-fought split, taking the first game 12-9, but dropping the second 5-4 in eight innings.
In the first game, Tanner Truesdell had a great night at the plate, going four-for-four with two doubles, a home run  and seven RBIs to lead the Lion offensive attack.
Alex Uhlenhopp’s three hits, one of them a triple, brought in three runs in the game.
Ozzie Adams had two hits in the game, one of them a double.  He pitched the win, giving up four hits and striking out three.  Elliott Neuberger came in to relieve and struck out three.  He was stung for 10 hits.  Neuberger and Zach Bendickson also had doubles in the win.
In the second game, hits were a bit harder to come by and the Lions fell 5-4 in eight innings.  Colin Lobdell took the loss on the mound, giving up four hits.
Jake Kockler had two of Clear Lake’s five hits in the contest.  Adams, Mike Keeran and Tanner Tusha each had one.  Tanner Truesdell was credited with a pair of RBIs.

CL 6, St. Ansgar 0
CL 6, St. Ansgar 1
Freshman pitcher Gavin Sheakley had a break-out performance in a pair of non-conference games played against St. Ansgar Tuesday, June 22.  Sheakley shut down a St. Ansgar team that was 14-5 entering the game.  He pitched a total of nine innings over the two games, only allowing one run on a wild pitch on a dropped third strike in game two.
“For a freshman getting his first varsity start to get not just one, but two wins, is something hopefully he can build on in his young career,” said Coach Seth Thompson.  “Our offense did a nice job of applying constant pressure on their defense, scoring 12 runs in the eight innings we batted.”
In game one, which the Lions won 6-0 in five innings, the team pounded out 12 hits.  Jake Kockler led the way with three hits, including a double.  Elliott Neuberger, Mike Keeran and Tanner Tusha had two hits apiece.  Neuberger’s were both triples.
In the second game, Kockler continued to be in the zone.  He smacked two of the teams’ six hits over five innings.
The Clear Lake offense used three hits and three walks in the first inning to establish a 4-0 lead.  Neuberger drove in two runs in the frame with a double.

CL 16, Lake Mills 11 (8)
Clear Lake was back in action on Thursday when it played Lake Mills in another nonconference affair.  Coach Seth Thompson knew it wasn’t pretty, but he was pleased with a 16-11 win.
“I have always felt as a coach that every walk my pitchers give up takes a few days off my life.  If this theory is true, after games like tonight I hope I was supposed to live a really long life originally,” joked Thompson.  “To these kids’ credit they proved it is indeed possible to win a game even when giving up 16 walks, three hit batters and a grand slam.”
The Lions were on their way to big win when their lead began to evaporate in the sixth inning.  They responded with seven runs in the eighth inning to get a victory.
“They really hung in there to get the win against a really good Lake Mills team on the road that was 16-3 entering the game,” added Thompson.
The Lion leader credited catcher Tanner Tusha with doing a great job early wiping out some of the early walks issued by Lion pitchers.  “He made some great plays to get some outs on the bases, and our only senior Alex Uhlenhopp gave us a huge lift by getting the last three outs coming in with the bases loaded in the eighth inning.”
Lions recording multiple hits in the game were Mike Keeran (3), Zach Bendickson (2), Ozzie Adams (2), Austin Kessler (2) and Colin Lobdell (2).  Lobdell had a team-leading four RBI.

CL 6, Garrigan 1
The Lions stayed one game out of the North Central Conference lead heading into a showdown with Hampton with a 6-1 win over Garrigan Friday, June 25.
Elliott Neuberger led the way with a sharp night on the mound and offensively getting his first homerun of the year.
The game was suspended due to the threat of severe weather in the bottom of the sixth inning and by rule became a complete game reverting back to the last completed inning (fifth) when it was rained out.

Softball team endures a long week on the road

The Clear Lake girls endured a long week, playing six games-- all on the road.  The Lions went 1-5 on the week, making their record  8-11 overall and 4-6 in the North Central Conference.

St. Ed’s 6, CL 0
St. Ed’s 11, CL 3
Timely hitting was the difference in the first of two games played against St. Ed’s Monday.
“The first game was much closer than the score reflects,” said Coach Nikki Petersburg.  “We had more runners on and several times our runners were in scoring position with less than two outs.  We just never capitalized.  St. Eds got runners on here and there, but the difference was they had hits with runners on while we got outs.”
The Lions had six hits in the game, led by Rea Faber with two.  Ashley Willms, Jordan Crosser, Taylor Diehl and Rachel Kopriva all had singles.
Diehl pitched in the loss.  St. Ed’s had six hits; Diehl struck out one.
In the second game, St. Ed’s powered up its offense and used 12 hits to defeat the Lions 11-3.  The Lions managed just five hits, with two again provided by Faber.  Brittany Mumm, Kathryn Nieman and Emma Schiller had the others.  Mumm and Nieman got the RBIs.
Sarah Barlow pitched for the Lions.  She gave up 11 hits in the loss.

CL 8, Garner 1
The Lions picked up a much-needed win Tuesday at Garner.  They won the non-conference game by a score of 8-1.
“We had solid defense, a super second inning offensively, and we played much better than in the several games previous,” noted Coach Petersburg.
The Lions were propelled by nine hits.  Macey Hansen had three of those, while Rea Faber stroked two for a pair of RBIs.
Brittany Mumm, Ashley Willms, Olivia Myers and Jordan Crosser all had hits.
Taylor Diehl was the winning pitcher.  She limited the Cards to seven hits and struck out one.

Webster City 11, CL 1
Webster City swung hot bats and the Lions were cold offensively and defensively in an 11-1 game played Wednesday.      “Again, the opposing team showed how good of a hitting team they are and we didn’t.  Making matters worse, we had seven defensive errors,” noted Coach Petersburg.
Rea Faber had half of Clear Lake’s four hits in the game.  Olivia Myers and Rachel Kopriva got on base with singles.
Taylor Diehl gave up 14 hits in the game and struck out four.

Forest City 11, CL 3
Forest City won a non-conference game against the Lions Thursday.  The game was much closer than the score indicates, as the Lions put pressure on the Indians, especially in the early innings.
As the game wore on, errors began to mount for the Lions.  They committed seven in the game.
Macey Hansen had a good night at the plate, going two-for-two with a two-run home run and an intentional walk.
Olivia Myers also continued to hit well.  She tallied two singles.  Rea Faber, Kathryn Nieman and Hannah Bartlett all singled.
Forest City stung pitcher Taylor Diehl for 13 hits; she struck out four.

Garrigan 2, CL 0
Bishop Garrigan’s Kelly Klein pitched a very tough five  innings, holding off the Lion bats until the sixth and seventh innings, which proved to be too late.
    Garrigan earned a 2-0 victory.
“We committed no errors, battled hard to get bases loaded in the top of the seventh, and showed serious determination.  This loss almost counts as a win in my book,” said Coach Petersburg.
The Lions were held to just two hits in the game.  Macey Hansen and Ashley Willms reached base on singles.
Sarah Barlow was on the mound for the Lions.  She was touched for seven hits and struck out one.

Lovell and Monson earn All-State recognition

A pair of Clear Lake High School golfers have earned All-State honors.
Meg Monson, leader of the Lions’ Class 3A championship team, was named as a First Team All-Stater.  Monson, a sophomore, was also a First Team selection last year.
Chris Lovell, a senior, was also a repeat selection. The CLHS senior was a Second Team Class 3A pick for the second straight year.  Lovell was the leader of the Lions team which placed fourth at State this year.
