Lions fall to Bondurant despite a hard fight [1]

Posted May 15th, 2008

Clear Lake roared back from a 1-0 halftime deficit to tie the score, but ultimately fell 3-1 to Bondurant Friday.
“Our guys fought really hard against a team that beat them 9-0 last year, and to only get beat 3-1 was a welcomed accomplishment,” said Clear Lake Coach Matt Wade.
The coach praised the play of goalie Eric Asbe, saying the senior goalkeeper “played out of his mind this game” and made great save after great save to give the team  motivation to keep fighting.

Conference Tournament

The Lions met North Polk in the first round of their conference tournament on Saturday.  The Lions battled their opponent to a 1-1 tie through regulation and overtime.  The match ended with a penalty shoot-out  to decide the winner.
The two teams  were tied after the first five shots and went to sudden death shots.  Both teams missed their first shot, but Clear Lake made its second shot and goalie Eric Asbe blocked North Polk’s second shot giving the Lions a  5-4 victory in penalties.  In the second round, Clear Lake met Bondurant for the second time in two days.  Again, it was a close match.
The Lions played hard and the score remained 1-1 until 12 minutes remained in the game.  After the game was stopped for 25 minutes due to a serious knee injury suffered by a senior from Bondurant, it continued and the Blue Jays were able to slip in two goals.  So for the second time in as many days, the score line again was 3-1 in favor of Bondurant.

Bondurant maintained contol of the ball, holding the Lions to just six shots at the goal in a 5-0 game played May 5.
Jesslyn McGrath and Brita Hand took most of the shots for the Lions, but were held scoreless.  The Lion defense gave up shots only when Bondurant out ran them and the ball bounced their way.  Coach Lothar Meyer credited Samantha Faber and Samatha Hicok for doing most of the defensive work.

CL 1, Webster City 0
Heavy rain and threatening weather forced an early stop to play in Webster City Tuesday, May 6.  Jesslyn McGrath scored at the 34 minute mark for the Lions. That was the only score in the abbreviated contest.
Coach Lothar Meyer said that due to injury of Erica Lovick, he switched some players around in the match.
Brita Hand had seven shots in the game.  McGrath followed with six, while  Hannah Trembeth had  five.  The coach noted he was pleased that young Rachel Kopriva made three shots in the match.
Diana Wright moved from her defensive back position to mid field and took two shots at goal.
Allison Schaefer, Samantha Faber and  Laura Fyfe held  the Webster City team at bay with their out of bounds play control. Stacie Olk, as a result, had only 7 saves at goal.
