The Mason City man accused of killing his mother with a hatchet turned himself in to Clear Lake authorities just after 3 a.m. Sunday, Jan. 20.
Jordan Scott Johnson, 23, walked into the Clear Lake Police Department at approximately 3:05 a.m. and told the dispatcher that he needed to be arrested, because he had done something very bad.
Officers responded to the police department and placed Johnson under arrest.
Early Sunday morning, approximately 12:50 a.m., the Mason City Police Department put out a notice to area law enforcement that officers should be on the lookout for Johnson, of Mason City. According to Clear Lake Police Chief Greg Peterson, Johnson was wanted for questioning in the homicide of his mother, Rita Seely. It was believed the homicide had occurred up to two hours prior to the notification. Johnson was thought to be driving a 1998 Oldsmobile Aurora. Officers were cautioned that Johnson might be armed and dangerous.
The Mason City Police Department was notified that Johnson was in custody in Clear Lake and at approximately 3:31 a.m. Mason City police officers arrived in Clear Lake and questioned Johnson.
The vehicle Johnson was driving was towed to be held for evidence.
At 7:20 a.m., Mason City officers left the CLPD with Johnson in custody.
