Softball team ready for late season run

The Clear Lake softball team is continuing to show improvement which Coach Nicki Petersburg feels will have her team ready for a late season run.  Last week the Lions played their best ball of the season while earning a sin over St. Ed’s.  They also topped Algona during the week to go to 9-17 on the year.

    The Lions sputtered at the start of the week.  Six errors on defense helped Hampton-Dumont to an 11-3 victory Monday, June 27. 
  

 “Hampton deserves a lot of credit for a well played game offensively, pounding out 12 hits,” said Coach Petersburg.  “We put the ball in play a lot, however our hits, even though solid, went right to their defense for easy outs.”

    Clear Lake led 3-2 entering the fifth inning before Hampton-Dumont scored nine runs over the next two innings.
     Emma Schiller was the leader offensively for the Lions with two hits, one a two-run double for an RBI.  Hannah Bartlett, Taylor Diehl and Rea Faber had the Lions’ only other hits.  Diehl had two RBI in the game. 
    Diehl was the pitcher of record, giving up 10 hits in five and two-thirds innings pitched.  She walked struck out one and walked four.  Sara Barlow pitched one and one-third inning, giving up two hits.
    
CL 14, Algona 6
    The bats came alive for the Lions when they hosted Algona Wednesday, June 29.  They used 19 hits to score 14 runs and defeat Algona 14-6.
    Despite the lopsided score, the game was hard-fought.  Algona had nine hits in the game off Taylor Diehl and took advantage of a few Lion errors to score.  Diehl struck out one and walked three in the win.
    Six Lions had multiple hits.  Rea Faber, Emma Schiller and Hannah Bartlett pulled the load with nine RBIs and 10 hits between them.  Faber’s four hits in five at-bats led the way.  She had two stolen bases and scored four runs.   Schiller and Bartlett each had three hits, with Bartlett getting a double.  Schiller paced the team in RBIs with five.
    Rachel Korpriva also had three hits, as did Megan Loux. 
    “Megan had a break-out game with three hits and three runs.  She will be a key asset in the years to come,” said Coach Petersburg. 

WC 8, CL 1
    Errors were costly for the Lions in an 8-1 loss to Webster City Thursday. 
    “Taylor (Diehl) pitched a good game, but our errors proved to be too much against a good base running team.  It was a frustrating loss because we couldn’t get started at the plate and we took a few steps backwards in our defensive performance,” said Coach Petersburg.    
    The Lions scattered seven hits in the game, with Hannah Bartlett and Emma Schiller each getting two.

    Friday was a long, hard day but in the end the Lions looked good in three outings.  They started the day with a doubleheader against Fort Dodge St. Ed’s at noon. 
    “Those games were quite possibly our best games of the year with all-around performances by everyone,” said Coach Petersburg.   “In the first game, we battled and went back and forth with the lead.  The difference was a good hit by St. Ed’s Josie Heesch, golfing a pitch out of the park in the top of the seventh.  It was a tough loss, but a good game.”
    Senior Rea Faber led the Lion attack on the game, getting four of Clear Lake’s 12 hits.  Megan Loux continued to swing the bat well.  The sophomore had three hits in four at-bats. Ryan Pierce also - Read More Via e-Edition
