    Camilla Hackett, 93, of Opportunity Village in Clear Lake, died Monday, Feb. 27, 2012 at Oakwood Care Center in Clear Lake.

    Teresa Darlene Linahon, 81, of 1417 Main Ave., Clear Lake, died Wednesday, Feb. 29, 2012 at Mercy Medical Center North Iowa, Mason City, Iowa.
    Funeral services were held Saturday, March 3, at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, Clear Lake, with Msgr. Joseph J. Slepicka officiating. Interment was in Elmwood-St.

Martha Buck

    Martha Buck, 90, Our beautiful mother, grandma and great-grandma, was called Home Saturday, March 3, 2012 at the Heritage Care Center, Mason City, Iowa.  Her life will be celebrated Thursday, March 8, at 1:30 p.m. at United Methodist Church, 508 2nd Avenue North, Clear Lake, with the Rev. Diana Hoover officiating.  Visitation will be held Wednesday, March 7, 5-7 p.m. at Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 North 4th Street, Clear Lake, and one hour before the service on Thursday, at the church. 

Monson and Anderson earn NCC honors

    Clear Lake senior Meg Monson has received First Team All-North Central Conference and was one of 10 players named to the Class 3A North All-District team.  The North District includes 12 Class 3A teams.

Mathews and Spilman earn spots on Cornbelt All-Conference teams

The Ventura girls basketball team had two girls named to All-Conference teams for the Cornbelt Conference.  Emily Mathews, a sophomore, was named First Team All-Conference and Emily Spilman, a freshman, earned Honorable Mention recognition.

Toppin and Watson earn All-Conference recognition

Joel Toppin and Joel Watson each earned recognition on the Cornbelt All-Conference teams for the 2011-12 season.  Toppin, a sophomore, was named First Team All-Conference, while Watson, a senior, received Honorable Mention recognition.

    It’s always a good time for a good story, but considering March is Women’s History Month, along with the Clear Lake Historical Society’s focus on raising funds for its Save the Schoolhouse Campaign, it’s the perfect time to shed some light on the Monona VanCise mystery.

CL pastor had close ties to American teacher shot in Iraq

   Time spent in Iraq is inherently dangerous, even for those associated with mission work.  But the Rev. Dean Hess, from Clear Lake, said he was shocked and surprised to learn of the recent murder of a teacher with whom he lived and worked with in 2008.
