Voter registration deadline is Friday

Friday, Oct. 28, is the final day to pre-register to vote in the Nov. 8, Regular City Election.
The office of the Cerro Gordo County Auditor will be open an extra half hour – until 5 p.m. – on that date for eligible electors who wish to register in person. Completed voter registrations may be mailed to the county auditor, but must be either received by the above deadline or postmarked on/before Monday, Oct. 24 in order to be valid for the Nov. 8 Regular City Election.
CL, MC School Districts interested in new school

The Clear Lake School Board joined its Mason City counterparts Monday and authorized Superintendent Anita Micich to send in an application of intent to establish an Iowa Innovation Zone School.
Kelli Mason, Technology Integration coach for the district, presented information about New Tech Network, a type of academy school which uses “project-based learning” for high school students. Mason recently visited four New Tech schools located in Indiana and Illinois in mid-September. Clear Lake and Mason City are thought to be the first districts in the state considering establishing a New Tech Network School.
Currently, New Tech Network supports 62 public high schools in 14 states.

Rural customers could see rates up, service down
The Federal Communications Commission is scheduled to meet Oct. 27 to act on the new rules, which will significantly impact rural Iowans. Local telephone and Internet providers fear the new rules will hurt their ability to serve rural areas by redirecting their funding, which could lead to sharp price increases, degraded service and a larger digital divide.

The families of Ritchie Valens and J. P. “The Big Bopper” Richardson were in Clear Lake last week to attend the dedication of a new park just west of the Surf Ballroom which honors the memory of their loves ones, along with rock and roll icon Buddy Holly.
