Man sentenced to 10-years for attempting to steal child

A Belmond man accused of trying to steal an infant from a Clear Lake bar earlier this year has been sentenced to 10-years in prison.

Jonathan Workman, 34, entered an Alford plea on the charge of child stealing after he was accused of trying to take a six-month-old from Rumorz on April 20.  An Alford plea means the defendant does not admit guilt but acknowledges prosecutors can likely prove the charge. Two other charges in the case were dismissed.  

   

Three candidates on the ballot for two Ventura Council seats

One incumbent and two challengers filed nomination papers for two Ventura City Council seats.  Kristie Meints, 2605 E. Lake St.,  and Fred Petersburg, 1101 E. Lake St., are seeking the Council positions, as well as incumbent Brian Vaage, 101 E. Lake St.  

Questionnaires sent to each candidate by the Mirror-Reporter were returned by Meints and Petersburg.   Vaage, who is looking for a third term on the Council, chose not to complete the questionnaire. Council 

   

City sets public hearing for $2.5 million North Shore Drive reconstruction

The Clear Lake City Council initiated the special assessment process Monday night for a $2.5 million North Shore Drive Street Project slated to begin in 2014.  The Council also set a public hearing for the project for 5:30 p.m. Monday, Nov. 25.

According to City Administrator Scott Flory, notices to affected property owners will be mailed on or about Nov. 5.  The project bid letting will occur in January, 2014.
