Six Lions help team finish fourth at State

Two Clear Lake wrestlers advanced to the State Wrestling Championship round and all six qualifiers scored points, helping the Lions to a fourth place team finish Saturday in Des Moines.  

Five of Clear Lake’s six grapplers placed, led by senior Andres Gonzalez at 138-pounds and freshman Ryan Leisure at 113.  Both made the finals, but lost and finished as runner-up at their respective weights.  

   

Wrestling team places seventh in State Duals

The Clear Lake wrestlers placed seventh Wednesday in the State Duals in Des Moines. 

Clear Lake (23-4), the fifth seed in the Class 2A field, started the day matched against the number four seed, Creston-Orient Macksburg (16-0).  The Lions won five of the first six matches, but were defeated 36-32.

Shooting heats up to help CL boys past Union, LaPorte City

The Clear Lake boys took the first step toward their goal of reaching the State Tournament with a 71-49 victory over La Porte City, Union Monday night in Charles City.  The win sets up a meeting with Waverly-Shell Rock Thursday night in the 3A District semi final. That game is slated to tip off at 7 p.m. in Mason City.  The Go-Hawks have had the Lions’ number in the post-season, defeating them in the District final or Sub-State each of the last three years.  Monday the Go-Hawks handled Charles City, 54-33.

Lions advance to District final

The Clear Lake and Garner-Hayfield/Ventura girls pushed each other to the limit Wednesday night, with the Lions emerging as the winner in the post-season second round game, 43-39.

“We knew the GHV game was going to be a tester for us,” said Clear Lake Coach Bart Smith.
