A week of ups and downs for the Cardinals

It was a win and a loss for the Garner-Hayfield/Ventura boys basketball team last week.  The Cardinals topped Newman, but fell to a tough Forest City team.

GHV 65, Newman 54

The Newman Catholic boys basketball team didn’t have an answer to Garner-Hayfield/Ventura’s one-two punch of Braden Meints and Joel Toppin. The dynamic duo combined for 37 points and 17 rebounds to lead the Cardinals to a 65-54 victory over the Knights at home on Friday, Jan. 17.

   

GHV wrestlers compete at Algona Tournament

The Garner-Hayfield/Ventura wrestling team met some tough competition at the Algona Tournament held on Saturday, Jan. 18.

“We went 1-4 on the day, but I was pleased with the way we competed today,” said Coach Steve Smith. “The competition was tough there today, but each time out we look better and better, which is what we want.”

   

Lions chalk up 10th win

The Clear Lake boys chalked up their 10th win of the season and put themselves in the North Central Conference driver’s seat with a win over previously undefeated St. Ed’s last week.  The Lions beat the Gaels and Clarion-Goldfield by 22 and 30 points respectively to go to 9-0 in the NCC.

   

Cardinals top North Iowa and Lake Mills; fall to Algona

The Garner-Hayfield/Ventura boys moved their North Iowa Conference record to 6-3 with two more wins.

GHV 52-North Iowa 32

Jake Wolf was the reason the Cardinals came away with a 52-32 win over North Iowa on Tuesday, Jan. 7.
