A match made in heaven: Hummingbirds and jewelweed

The ruby-throated hummingbird is aptly named. When illuminated by even the slightest hint of sunlight, the male’s ruby red bib sparkles with all the intensity of the finest jewel. The hummingbird’s glossy emerald back is equally iridescent, making the species one of our most attractive backyard birds. 

   

Oak Hills hold Junior Open Golf Tournament

 Oak Hills Golf Course, Clear Lake, held a Junior Open Golf Tournament on Tuesday, Aug. 12. Thirty young golfers participated in the nine hole event.

Three area bike enthusiasts participated in the Canton Cycling Classic bike races held Aug. 9 and 10 in Canton, S.D. The event was part of the Midwest Flyover Series.

   

Sailing to success

Wil Cooney, an incoming freshman at Clear Lake High School, has been recognized for his sailing ability. Cooney was asked to participate in the 2014 X Class Blue Chip Regatta, an invitation only event that brings together 30 of the best X boat sailors in the Midwest. Wil was the only sailor asked to compete from Clear Lake and he was one of two in the state of Iowa.
