Ventura school tax rate will drop 99-cents

The Ventura School District, which already had the second lowest school tax rate in the state, will reduce its tax asking by 99-cents in the 2012-13 school year.  The School Board held its budget hearing Monday night and approved dropping its school tax rate from $9.92 per $1,000 of assessed property valuation to $8.93 per $1,000.

    Superintendent Tyler Williams explained the district was able to make the substantial cut in its rate due to the increase in taxable valuation within the school district. 
    The Okoboji School District currently has the lowest school tax rate, Williams reported.  The state average this year is $15.03 per $1,000 of assessed property valuation.
    Williams said the Ventura School District, as well as the Garner-Hayfield School District, will each experience a reduction in teaching staff.  Attrition will trim the staff numbers he said.
