Teena Marie was born May 23, 1952 in Joplin, Mo., the daughter of Vay Irwin and LeVohn Vivian (Lundby) Miller. She graduated from Roosevelt High School in Des Moines before beginning her cosmetology career at the Iowa School of Beauty. In March of 1972, she married Jim West in Des Moines. The couple had a son, W. Greysen West.  In 1979, she opened Hair West in Clear Lake. In 1993, they sold the business and Teena began work for Custom Formulations in Minneapolis, Minn. and later Dallas, Texas. In October 2007, Jim passed away. Soon after she returned to Iowa, continuing her career in cosmetology. On Oct. 15, 2011 she married Stephen Stone, in Guatemala, he preceded her in death in 2019.

Teena, the driving force behind the original Hair West, adorned heads with skill and hearts with love. Her mastery extended beyond her salon, as she enlightened conferences, continuing education and on TV, unraveling the magic of hairstyling. With her husband, Jim, she welcomed students from around the world, opening their home to foreign and international students. She became a cherished “Mom” to many. A member of Harvest Bible Chapel North Iowa, her legacy weaves together care, faith in Jesus Christ, and a lifelong commitment to nurturing both beauty and souls.

Those surviving are her son, W. Greysen (Dawn) West; grandson, W. Garrett (Ashley) West; great-grandson, Winston G. West; as well as extended family.

Preceding her in death are her parents, Vay Irwin & LeVohn Vivian Miller, and husbands, Jim West and Stephen Stone.

Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, Clear Lake, is in charge of arrangements.
