Soccer girls go 2-1

The Clear Lake girls went 2-1 in soccer action during the last week.  Monday, May 8, the Lions posted a shutout at Webster City, but Friday Aplington-Parkersburg got the win in two overtimes.  They rebounded with a 5-1 win over Garner-Hayfield Monday night at Lions field.

The team, with a record of 7-3, will take on Iowa Falls-Alden Thursday, May 17.  Thursday will be Parent Night and Senior Night for both the boys and girls soccer teams. The varsity doubleheader has also been designated as cancer awareness night.  The girls team will be wearing pink socks donated by the Pleggenkuhle family.  Donations to the American Cancer Society will be accepted at the ticket gate.

CL 4, WC 0
Defense was the name of the game for the Lions at Webster City in a 4-0 win.
“Sweepers Madison Faber and Alicia Miller, along with defenders Bailey Kibsgaard, Emily Phalen and Emily Willms prevented (goal keeper) Riley Brinkman from having much action in goal,” said Coach Lothar Meyer.
Brinkman had three saves in the match.
The girls ran well on a long field with wind rushing across the field, the coach added.
Logan Anderson, Megan Kopriva, Ashley Miszewski and Ivy Hogg all scored for the Lions.  Hannah Bartlett provided two assists.  On the night, Clear Lake made 15 shots at goal.

A-P 2, CL 1 (2 OT)
Aplington-Parkersburg had just seven shots on goal, compared to Clear Lake’s 22, but A-P came away with a 2-1 win in double overtime Friday, May 11.
A-P evened the score at 1-1 with just 12 minutes to go in the second half, then found the back of the net again with under two minutes to go in the second overtime for a 2-1 win Friday, May 11.
The Lions took 22 shots at goal in the 112 minute game, but the only score came from Megan Kopriva off a corner kick by Ashley Miszewski.
“The girls know they have a good season going with only six goals scored in losses and wins against them,” said Coach Meyer.  “It was a learning point with credit to the matches we’ve played.”
