Lions face stiff competition at Waverly Tournament

The Clear Lake boys soccer team pushed some of the state’s best soccer teams to the brink in the past week, emerging with a split in match play and an 0-3 record at the Waverly Soccer Tournament.
WC 1, CL 0
Webster City made a cross in the 29th minute of the contest which the Lynx converted for the only goal of the contest May 1.  Webster City (11-2-1) got their fifth shut out of their season, 1-0.

“Webster City is a quality team and we knew we needed to play good soccer to make a game of it,” said Coach Matt Anderson. “We made a couple of adjustments at half and controlled the ball better in the second half.
A strategic move in the final minutes of the game gave the Lions scoring opportunities, but they could not find the back of the net.
“In the 75th minute I placed JV goalie Austin Pergo in the box and got Bryson Hamilton into the field,” explained Coach Anderson. “This adjustment gave us numerous shots on goal in the final five minutes.  Unfortunately, we could not get the ball across the line.”
Hamilton finished the contest with 13 saves, Pergo had one and Carson Farmer had one.
“The guys are good enough to compete with anyone and they showed that tonight,” said Anderson.

CL 4, Garner 2
The Lions got off to a quick start against Garner Thursday, May 3, with Karlen Lu scoring a goal in the 17th minute.
The teams had to sit through a one and one-half hour lightning delay in the 34th minute, but the Lions  resumed the contest ready to go and scored their second goal in 35th minute.  Lu made an assist to Brice Wilcke who converted for the header goal.
The Lions finished the first half with five additional shots on goal which bounced off the goal post or were saved by their keeper.
Bryson Hamilton finished the first half in goal box with four saves.  Wilcke resumed goal keeper duties at the half.
Clear Lake’s third goal came in the 56th minute, as Jack Abbas made an assist to Hamilton for the score.     Garner got on the board with a goal in the 64th minute and Clear Lake’s fourth goal came in the 67th minute.  Antonio DiMarco took a shot which bounced off the goal post.  Jack Finn received the rebound and made a nice shot for the final goal.   Garner got one additional score in the 70th minute to complete the scoring.      Wilcke finished the contest with four saves.
