Lady Vikes place fourth in own tournament

The Ventura volleyball team opened the 2011 season by hosting a tournament on Saturday, Aug. 27.  The Lady Vikes compiled a 2-3 record for the day and placed fourth out of eight teams. Central Springs won the tournament, followed by West Fork in second and RRMR in third.  Also competing in the tournament were Garner-Hayfield, Northwood-Kensett, North Iowa and Newman Catholic.

    “We came out strong and played hard,” said Coach Abby Roenfanz.  “This team has a lot of drive and they will succeed.  I am very proud of them for the way they played today.  They have so much potential and I am very excited for the rest of the season.”
    Ventura opened the day against North Iowa, where they picked up two wins, 21-14 and 21-17.  Emily Mathews led the team, hitting 9/12 with one kill.  She also collected one solo block and was 12/12 serving with five aces.  Brittani Watson was 6/6 hitting with two kills.  Sebelia Markle was 11/11 serving with four aces.  Courtney Younge had 12 assists.  Shelby Rayhons led the team in digs with three.
    Ventura faced Newman Catholic in the second game of the day and picked up two more wins, 21-17 and 21-16.  Markle led the team at the service line, going 16/18 with five aces.  Mathews was 8/9 hitting, with two kills and four solo blocks.  Watson was 6/6 serving with two aces.  She was 6/6 at the net with two kills.  Younge led the team in assists with six.
    Against West Fork, Mathews led the team at the net, going 13/15 hitting with five kills.  Watson was 9/12 hitting with three kills, Morgan Ames was 4/6 hitting with two kills and Hallie Hall was 6/8 hitting with one kill.  Younge led the team in assists with nine.  Ventura fell to West Fork, 21-12, 21-12.
