CL girls open season with impressive start

The Clear Lake girls golf team opened the season in impressive fashion.
Meg Monson’s 39 led the Lions to a triangular win over Mason City and Newman Catholic April 9.  The match was played at the Mason City Country Club.  The Clear Lake team fired a 179.  Mason City was next at 212, followed by Newman Catholic at 215.  Monson was the medalist.

Additional Clear Lake scores which counted toward the winning total all came in under 50, which was a good early sign for Coach Fred Wieck. Two others also playing varsity had scores of 49 and 51.
“We played pretty well on a cold windy night,” said Wieck.  “Meg was very good, as we have come to expect, and Paige Backhaus played very well in her first varsity match.
Backhaus, a sophomore, fired a 44, while junior Malorie Fischels and senior Emily Monson carded 48s.  Lexi Lovik came in with a 49 and Megan Loux shot a 51 for the Lions.
A key North Central Conference dual meet with Bishop Garrigan was postponed Friday.  That meet has been rescheduled for Monday, April 23.
